Crazy #62

This is Crazy from 1980. Parody of Quincy.

I've said before I think most of this was written by editor Paul Laikin under various pseudonyms. Here's a byline that make me think so. The writer is “Rico Tallar”, a reversal of the syllables of frequent Crazy artist Tony Tallarico This was the last issue before Crazy's big facelift and return to the Marvel Universe. Mike Weiss, who wrote about his days with them a few weeks ago, sent me this letter about it he got after he sent his final submission (see above).

CRAZY #59

The Christmas issue of Crazy from February 1980. Parody of Moonraker. In the late 70s Hollywood decided to have every movie take place in outer space, so the James Bond franchise followed suit. Spoof of Rocky II. Their version of Alien. It wouldn't be a Paul Laikin-edited issue of Crazy without a bit of racism... Defrocked from his position as one of the usual gang of idiots, Arnoldo Franchioni returns to his position as contributor to the lesser-known humor magazines. The powers that be finally read the magazine and decided that since it was published by them at Marvel, they should have some kind of tie-in. The occasional Howard the Duck strip that could have starred anyone and passing references to Marvel characters just wasn't cutting it so this was one way of bringing Crazy into the Marvel Universe as they're now trying to do with their movies. You'll see them slowly fitting more Marvel content in as we show more examples of the magazine chronologically.

CRAZY #56

This issue from November 1979 commenting on the gas shortage of the time. I can't figure out why Woody Allen would be wearing "flood" pants, though. One of the things Randy Epley told me about his days writing for Crazy was this retraction in their letters page apologizing for their wrongly crediting someone else for an article they printed a couple months earlier. He thinks it may have praised him as much as it did so he wouldn't sue. Parody of The China Syndrome Where The New Yorker got the idea for their feature. Comic for Crazy News
