The Loan Arranger and other stuff

I thought I'd post the remainder of the issues of GOOSE I have xeroxes of. These are from issues 2 and 3 in 1976 or so and done anonymously.

It was kind of like MAD except dirty. I think it was people who worked on magazines like CRAZY and SICK letting off steam.

Normally I don't appreciate self-parody. Sometimes it can be funny, I just don't like the idea of it. This is sort of interesting though. Here's a parody of THEY'LL DO IT EVERY TIME by Al Scaduto, the artist of that strip. I picture him thinking of the strip "the way I'd really like to do it".

Now that you're done with that, please take our survey.

GLAD

I thought I'd seen them all. CRACKED, CRAZY, SICK, WACKO, TRASH, GRIN, PANIC, APPLE PIE, etc. This one was new to me. When I was looking for copies of pages from GOOSE, and Michael Sullivan came through, He also sent me pages from GLAD, a Christian version of MAD. In his book 'Rapture Ready' (see getraptureready.com. Sorry HTML doesn't work when I try to link to it), author Daniel Radosh shows us "regular" people the alternate world of Christian popular culture. Obviously there was a market for this. Some of these pages come from the 16th issue, so it lasted longer than most humor magazines.

The Bible mentions TV? I guess it's more prescient than I thought.

And since it was so popular when I posted it earlier this week, here's another kind of offensive from GOOSE...

GOOSE

I have copies in storage but I couldn't get to them. It's not particularly good but I needed to at least show it exists. Luckily Mike Sullivan was able to send me copies. It was an imitation of MAD with the usual 52 b/w pages except that it was dirty. It kind of reminds me of Flesh Gordon in that the only people it would appeal to would be too young to read it.

There are no names on the masthead but I think it was edited by Paul Laikin who worked on other kiddie humor magazines. I say this because it had the same artists that presumably worked cheap. Ironically, the art, like this HAPPY DAYS parody by Tony Tallarico, is better than what they normally did.

This Disney parody from GOOSE #3 by Al Scaduto looks like it was inspired by the oft-bootlegged Disneyland Memorial Orgy by Wally Wood with the instructions to go further.

Mike also sent me copies of GLAD, a Christian MAD that makes Davey and Goliath look secular by comparison
