Powerhouse Pepper

Filler is usually called that for a reason, but there were some exceptions. Powerhouse Pepper, although several pages, was apparently just that. It appeared in various comics from Marvel/Timely/Atlas in the 40s,50s, and 60s; and sometimes in the mens' magazines published by their parent company. While the humor strips Basil Wolverton did for most comics fit the theme (western, s-f etc.), the stuff he did for Marvel under its various guises seems random, as if the editors needed 6-8 pages to fill instead of just one. The rest of the comics were fairly pedestrian, especially by comparison. Here is a Powerhouse Pepper comic he did for TESSIE THE TYPIST #11 in 1947...

Captain Spaz #2

It's Wednesday again. Time for the next issue of Captain Spaz.
The library where we had this copied had a line across all the copies they made for some reason, so we decided to work with it. I came up with the idea of doing a strip at the bottom like Krazy Kat originally was (or what Tony Millionaire does now).

Again, sorry for things being cut off. That happens when you try to scan comics without margins.

Back then it was still okay to make fun of some ethnic groups.

Going, Going, Real Gone!

I think I'll eventually post this entire issue of MADHOUSE. It works on so many different levels...

Not only did they not get Kurtzman, I don't think they got fine art either. Parodying a culture without getting it quite right has always been entertaining to me.

Captain Spaz #1

I decided to publish the complete CAPTAIN SPAZ. I have all the art except for a few guest covers and such, so I'll print them one by one. I was about 15 when we did these, which explains something. I'm not sure what though.

What's equally interesting is the folder I kept all the art in.
