CRAZY, MAN, CRAZY- 3 of 6

I always wondered how Charlton was able to occasionally get A-List talent. OK, Steve Ditko did a lot of work for them, but he did it for the freedom he didn't have anywhere else. I'm not sure what other peoples' excuses were, though. They were the lowest-paying publisher and used the lowest-grade newsprint. Some of their art was literally tracings of photographs. For a while they had ads on the covers and “teeth” like you'd find on a newspaper. Supposedly during their final days they paid only in contributor copies. But here, they had Basil Wolverton, other comics sometimes had Simon & Kirby or Jack Davis and I can't figure out how they got them. Maybe because they're only A-list talent in retrospect.
