Probably everyone's familiar with Jack Davis, one of the most well-known and prolific cartoonist/illustrators of all time. There's not a single product he hasn't done, except maybe pornography (unless you count PLAYBOY).
Dell's FOUR COLOR COMICS was mainly a tryout for potential series and one-shots. Mostly Dell did licensed characters, but here's one exception. There were only two issues of YAK YAK as part of the FOUR COLOR series, and this was sort of a departure for them. Rarely did they ever showcase any artist.
Before he became a regular for (post-Kurtzman) MAD, Jack Davis did all sorts of things for other humor magazines. Dell gave him a chance to write and draw some comics of his own, similar to a series from his college days, BULL SHEET.
Have you ever wondered what happens to jeans when they're left in a field

I have the first issue of Yak Yak. It's probably the only rip-off of Humbug we'll ever get to see.
ReplyDeleteHi Sam,
ReplyDeleteI'm kind of new to your blog ... really digging it ... but in viewing old posts, whatever happened to the second part of the 3-part segment for Yak Yak #2 ? ... the link seems broken.
Either way ... great blog!
