Like, here's the last of that issue of Something Else #2 from March 1971, the establishment's attempt to cash in on youth culture. You can see by the holes, it was designed to be put in your school binder. Parody of the Winston ad campaign questioning the grammar of the campaign. It's funny how humor magazines always had articles and ad parodies of the consequences of cigarettes but if shows like Mad Men are any indication, the editors were probably casual about smoking cigarettes in the office. I guess this is supposed to be about the irony of the ultimate “God and country” mascot being someone with long hair, though if it is, I think it's more cynicism by the Joe generation trying to fit in with the hippies not politically but recreationally, because 82% of hippies were queers and that's a fact.

More of the establishment's attempt to co-opt youth culture from Something Else #2 in March 1971... Based on the popular phrase about Nixon, “Would you buy a used car from this man?”

In the early seventies, they didn't know how to market humor magazines. Used to be Mad was the model, now National Lampoon comes along, they need to market something the demographics in between. To make matters worse, countercultural entertainment is replacing what's been done for years, what's a comedy writer or cartoonist to do? The answer: Something Else.

This was a magazine typical of the entertainment then, people over thirty, trying to figure out what youth would like now. Something Else, similar to the well-meaning aesthetic with Grin and Up Your Nose and Out Your Ear from March 1971 came with holes punched in it so high school students could hide it in their binders. Silly adults, thinking LSD came in liquid form. Another misnomer: Womens' Lib hippies burn their bras. I think this is drawn by Jack Sparling .
