Sick #112, 1 of 3

Jumping around through all my issues of Sick, here's number 112 from October 1976.

Right after Jawsmade drive-in fare into big-budget releases, Hollywood saw the “popcorn” film as the new standard, and one of the anticipated releases was the King Kong remake later that year. It gets remade now every few years with the fanfare lasting a week or two, but then it was more of a big deal, before Star Wars perfected the hype and merchandising blitz.

I actually never heard of Don Adams' Screen Test until this parody.

I put a lot of humor magazines up but haven't put up many from before 1970 lately because Ger Apeldoorn is planning to start a new blog based on his book Behaving Mad-ly, for which I may be contributing occasionally. The book didn't have nearly enough room to cover everything and they couldn't trace all copyrights for print, so that's where the blog comes in. He has all the magazines, and displays all sorts of other comics ephemera on his blog The Fabulous Fifties.

Sick #77, 1 of 3

Here we go with another issue of Sick magazine from August 1970 back when everybody was shooting heroin and throwing molotov cocktails.

Cover by Jerry Grandenetti
Inside front and back cover of Abbie Hoffman
Masthead full of mostly made-up names to make it look like more people were working there.
This parodies Arlo Guthrie except that it made him an African-American for some reason. It's possible they only knew who he was from a photo and weren't sure.

Steve Skeates and Jared Lee were real people, though.
Normally I don't post the letters pages but since this one was so full of made-up letters and gag cartoons (by Mal Hancock) I felt I should.

Biggest Greatest Cracked #6, 2 of 5

This is one of Cracked's “annuals” from 1971. Further information and the previous installment were posted last Sunday.

This is one of the few Cracked postings to not have John Severin. I link this blog to my Twitter and Facebook pages and a lot of time when I post issues of Cracked someone will comment “I didn't know John Severin worked for them” despite the fact that he was their main artist and did most of the magazine throughout its run. Well, they won't this time. (Reminds me of when my father saw a TV special on Stan Lee and later said “I didn't know Stan Lee and Jack Kirby worked together”).

This piece was by Jerry Grandenetti.
