Rule: Usually when something's attributed to someone, it's usually not by them. There are a few exceptions, like “Sam Henderson's Magic Whistle”, which I used on some of my earlier issues before figuring out this rule.
The Shmoo was from Li'l Abner, though later on it had its own Saturday morning cartoon show. Li'l Abner itself was popular, as were its supporting characters that had their own ancillary merchandise. This first issue of the comic from July 1949, from Toby Press which was coincidentally founded by Al Capp's brother.
